Two teenage boys were arrested Wednesday night in connection with the sexual assault of an underage girl that allegedly occurred in late September in unincorporated Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County sheriff’s deputies said Thursday.

A letter that Carondelet High School, an all-girls Catholic school located at 1133 Winton Drive in Concord, sent out to families Thursday confirmed that the victim was a Carondelet student.

It also stated that the alleged assault occurred off-campus, and one of the two suspects arrested is a student at the neighboring all-boys Catholic school De La Salle High.

Officials at De La Salle acknowledged media reports that a student had been arrested in the case in a letter sent out to parents around 1 p.m. Thursday, but said they have not yet been contacted by law enforcement and have “very little” information about the investigation.

“Although we cannot comment on the incident, let us make ourselves clear: at De La Salle High School, we expect and demand respect for all persons,” the letter said.

Both schools are taking measures to address the investigation, and are calling town hall meetings for staff and faculty as well as gathering their students for discussions on behavior and consequences.

“We take the safety and well-being of our young women extremely seriously,” Carondelet principal Kevin Cushing said in a statement. “We have had ongoing conversations with our students and implemented programs in partnership with De La Salle to educate all of our students around the global issues of sexual assault and creating an environment of mutual respect, and we will continue to do so.”

Investigators are asking anyone with additional information on the case to contact the sheriff’s sexual assault unit at (925) 313-2625. Anonymous tips can be reported at (866) 846-3592 or can be sent by email to tips@so.cccounty.us.

  1. Tracy: You are absolutely right. The media loves to attack anything negative that occurs at a Catholic school, as it furthers their agenda. Not so much when it occurs at a public school. They will never mention all the good things occurring at DLS, but will cover this story for ever.

  2. This is not a religious issue. Please do not deflect from the topic which is violence against women by BOYS and MEN. I am truly disgusted by your comment. This poor young lady will have to live with what happened to her for the rest of her life. That is the only thing that matters – that and how to stop these assaults from occuring in the first place.

  3. Hi Chet- I am a proud Carondelet alumni. I wanted to connect myself to this issue in that way so I can respectfully disagree with your comments. This is not the time to praise Carondelet or De La Salle, this is the time to report on the alleged incident. This is not a private or public school issue, this is an issue of sexual assault regarding minors. It’s terrible, regardless of where it happened.

  4. Kerri, you are absolutely correct, what allegedly happened is terrible, regardless of where it happened, and of course I have complete empathy for the victim. My point was not to downplay the horrible incident that allegedly occurred, and I apologize if it came across that way. My only point, was actually in reference to the prior post by Tracy, as to her question why they would mention one of the alleged rapist was from DLS, while not mentioning in the same exact article that the other alleged rapist was from a public school. I responded to Tracy’s question with my opinion on that matter. Nothing more, nothing less, was intended.
