The San Ramon Valley school board is set to hear an update Tuesday on the district’s personalized learning initiative, an effort aimed at implementing institutional and instructional changes to create more flexibility for students, families and staff.
District officials last month unveiled its initiative, complete with a series of ideas for more flexible learning opportunities, including multiple start/end times for schools, changing class requirements and limiting online grade-checking.
In the weeks since, district officials have been speaking with school communities and soliciting feedback about their proposals. The school board is due for an update on that process Tuesday evening in Danville.
Superintendent Rick Schmitt said district leaders have received a lot of critical feedback on the concept of removing a seventh class option for high school students, so they’ve amended their proposal to keep that option intact going forward.
“Our revised idea is that all current high school students will continue to have access to a 7th on-campus class option during their SRVUSD high school career,” Schmitt said in a statement posted on the district website.
“In addition, we will continue to work with staff and the community to ensure that all future SRVUSD high school students will be able to take two on-campus electives each year, in addition to the on-campus courses needed to graduate and meet elite college entrance requirements,” he added. “By no means are we considering reducing access to elective programs.”
The personalized learning initiative update is among a handful of presentations the school board is scheduled to hear at its meeting Tuesday, with open session beginning at 7 p.m. in the boardrooms at the district administrative complex at 699 Old Orchard Drive in Danville.

The board will receive a presentation in advance of American Indian Heritage Month, which is November.
Board members will hear about recent activities and programs at Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon. They will also consider a presentation from district staff on student achievement.
Discussion-only presentations are the theme for Tuesday’s open-session meeting. The only action items on the board’s agenda is a 12-item consent agenda and approval of prior meeting minutes.
Before the open meeting, the board will gather in closed session starting 6 p.m. to discuss two cases of existing litigation, three cases of anticipated litigation and appointing a new assistant principal for San Ramon’s Gale Ranch Middle School.
