A man who died in a solo wreck on Interstate 680 in Danville earlier this month has been identified by the Contra Costa County coroner’s office as 45-year-old Oakland resident Jason Comendador.

The fatal crash, attributed to Comendador suffering an apparent cardiac arrest, occurred the evening of Dec. 11, but it took coroner’s officials more than a week to identify the man’s next-of-kin. They released his name publicly for the first time Friday.

Comendador was driving northbound on I-680 when he crashed his vehicle into the center divider just south of El Cerro Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, which was reported at 5:08 p.m.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they found Comendador unconscious behind the wheel. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, according to the CHP.

Witnesses said he was driving erratically for a moment before his car struck the center divider.

There are no indications at this time that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, according to the coroner’s office.

Information from Bay City News Service was used in this report.
