Contra Costa County officials announced Wednesday that Anna Roth has been appointed as the new director of the county’s Health Services Department.
Roth has worked in Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) for almost 25 years, most recently as CEO of Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and Health Centers. She will be taking the place of Dr. William B. Walker, who is retiring after serving as director for over two decades.
“We are pleased to announce the selection of Anna Roth as our new Health Services director,” County Administrator David Twa said in a statement. “Anna is a seasoned Health Services executive working in CCHS for nearly 25 years and we look forward to her leadership in addressing the many issues facing the health department in the coming years.”
Roth has a master’s degree from University of California, San Francisco and a master’s degree in public health from Harvard University. She is a registered nurse and has worked in healthcare for over 30 years, and is a quality improvement fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
She also has served as a board member and chair of both the Essential Hospitals Institute and the California Health Care Safety Net Institute, and lectures at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health.
Roth is known as a strong advocate for including patients, families and the community in the healthcare delivery process.
“We congratulate Anna on her appointment and look forward to working with her on healthcare issues that impact our residents,” said Karen Mitchoff, chair for the county’s Board of Supervisors.
CCHS is the largest of Contra Costa’s government departments, with over 4,400 employees and an annual budget of $1.8 billion.
The department provides a variety of services, including primary, specialty and inpatient medical care, mental health services, substance abuse treatment, public health programs, environmental health protection, hazardous materials response and inspection, and emergency medial services. A county-operated health maintenance organization, the Contra Costa Health Plan, is also under its umbrella.
