The fifth annual Holi Festival is hitting San Ramon this Friday at Bishop Ranch.

Also known as the “Festival of Colors,” Holi is traditionally an Indian and Nepali holiday celebrating the triumph of good over evil and correlates with the passing of winter into spring. While Holi is primarily a Hindu festival, these days it is a popular event all across the world as a celebration of love, joy and color.

Participants celebrate the end of winter by throwing handfuls of brightly colored powder at one another. Just make sure you have some sort of eye protection (such as sunglasses) and are wearing old clothes (organizers say that white works best) because you will get covered in color.

“This is our fifth year holding the colorful festival at Bishop Ranch, and we love that friends, families, and communities come together from all over the East Bay to take part in this fun celebration of the beginning of Spring,” said Alexander Mehran Jr., president and COO of the Sunset Development Company, which owns and operates Bishop Ranch.

Along with the traditional throwing of colors there will be plenty of free family activities such as face-painting, henna tattoos, dance performances, live music, food trucks and a kids zone hosted by the city of San Ramon.

While the official Hindu Holi Festival has already taken place in India, Bay Area residents will get their chance to celebrate this Friday from 5:30-8 p.m. in Bishop Ranch at 2600 Camino Ramon. Entry is free and the whole family is welcome.

This year, the festival is expected to draw in over 1,500 guests from all across the Bay Area.
