A San Ramon man has been identified as the inmate who died around midnight Saturday at the Martinez Detention Facility, according to Contra Costa County sheriff’s officials.
Karthik Kandaswamy, 26, had been arrested earlier Saturday by San Ramon police on suspicion of battery and resisting arrest.
At 11:27 p.m. Saturday, deputies were alerted to a medical problem in a holding room at the jail. Deputies found Kandaswamy unresponsive and called jail medical personnel.
Sheriff’s officials said medics and firefighters also were called but Kandaswamy was pronounced dead at the scene following attempts to save his life.
