Contra Costa County, in a partnership with the National Park Service, is offering the chance for couples to get married inside the historic John Muir House in Martinez on Valentine’s Day, depending on the status of the federal government’s partial shutdown.

If the shutdown that began Dec. 22 is concluded prior to Feb. 14, the special Valentine’s Days ceremonies will be held between 10:20 a.m. and 3:20 p.m. People can book a time for their ceremony by calling 335-7900 or visiting www.contracostacore.us and clicking on the “Make a Ceremony Appointment” button.

John Muir weddings will be held in a room that contains a chandelier, grand piano and a view overlooking the property. The Italianate Victorian-style home was built in 1882, according to the Contra Costa County Clerk-Recorder’s Office.

“Like everybody else we are in wait and see mode,” said Paul Burgarino community education and engagement specialist for the county office.

Burgarino said that the county will provide alternative locations should the shutdown continue through Valentine’s Day. Current alternatives include the Clerk-Recorder’s Office building, which is equipped with two chapels and would be festively decorated.

“We’re excited to offer this experience on what many consider the most romantic day of the year,” he added, also encouraging residents to act fast because reservation slots do fill up quickly.

People can make appointments for ceremonies at the clerk-recorder office at 555 Escobar St. in Martinez.
