San Ramon Police Chief Craig Stevens is set to address the City Council at its regular meeting on Tuesday, giving a report on his department’s staff and reviewing its needs going forward.

The San Ramon Police Department is in need of two additional police officers, to help patrol the city, improve police response times and reduce the amount of overtime requested from existing officers, Stevens wrote in his staff report to the council.

“The population of the city has continued to increase. The last two years have also resulted in increased calls for police service. The addition of two additional police officers will assist the police department in keeping up with the population growth as well as the increased calls for service,” he said.

In 2007, the SRPD had 0.96 authorized officers for every 1,000 residents, according to Stevens report. Since then, the ratio shrunk slightly to 0.83 officers per 1,000 residents, as of 2018. For some regional perspective, the Pleasanton Police Department has a ratio of 1.05 to 1,000, and Walnut Creek maintains 1.16 to 1,000, according to Stevens.

The total financial impact of hiring and equipping the two officers, including a new vehicle worth approximately $50,000, would be approximately $430,000 for the 2019-20 budget, and an annual increase of $380,000 after that.

The City Council is set to discuss police staffing and other issues at its regular meeting, Tuesday 7 p.m., in the council chambers at San Ramon City Hall, 7000 Bollinger Canyon Road.

After the City Council reviews SRPD’s report, city staff will review San Ramon’s financial situation and give the finance division’s 2019-2019 midyear financial report.

Topics to be discussed include general fund revenues/expenditures, public work expenses, police services, budget adjustments and more.
