Memorial Day is a time for remembrance, community and appreciation for the hard earned freedoms achieved by members of the U.S. armed service, many of whom did not get to live to appreciate those freedoms.
To commemorate the holiday on Monday, communities throughout the San Ramon Valley will be hosting special events that will range from fun community celebrations to solemn vigils.
Danville will be celebrating in style by hosting the 28th Annual Memorial Day Remembrance event honoring fallen service members, which will once again be sponsored by the Viet Nam Veterans of Diablo Valley.
Starting at 10:30 a.m. with the presentation of Colors and military service flags, as well as welcoming remarks by president of Viet Nam Veterans of Diablo Valley Gary Estrella, the day features special ceremonies that include an acknowledgment of all veterans, a salute to each service branch, a series of guest speakers and live music.
Special guest speakers who will be featured include, US Army Capt. Kris Conklin, Danville Mayor Robert Storer and President of the Wheelchair Foundation David Behring.
The Memorial Day event will be held at Oak Hill Park, 3005 Stone Valley Road, in Danville and is expected to run from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Residents are invited to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the park even after the festivities end. The event is easy to spot; just follow the lines of American Flags posted along Stone Valley Road and it will bring attendees straight to the park.
Last year the popular event saw between 2,000 to 3,000 people from across the Bay Area attend the annual event, so interested residents are encouraged to find parking early.
Residents are also invited over to San Ramon, where the city is hosting its annual Art and Wind Festival, which will be held in San Ramon’s Central Park, 12501 Alcosta Blvd. from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday and Monday.
The Art and Wind Festival has become one of the most popular events in the Tri-Valley and will feature carnival rides, live music, food carts, art vendors, a police K-9 demonstration and the famous professional kite flying demonstrations.
