The Florence Nightingale Award is given out every year at San Ramon Regional Medical Center as a way to recognize the exceptional care of nurses who act as the lifeblood of the hospital, and according to her peers, this year’s winner exemplifies the best attributes found in model nurses.
During Nurses Week — which was held May 6-12 — San Ramon Regional officials announced that this year’s winner was longtime registered nurse Shu-Ling Chou, who was nominated by a number of her peers.
“Shu-Ling has consistently shown empathy and sympathy to her critically ill patients and their families. She always brings a positive attitude with her to work and her colleagues feel a sense of comfort knowing they are working with a strong nurse who is kind-hearted,” one colleague wrote in their anonymous nomination.
“Shu-Ling embodies every attribute that Florence Nightingale possessed,” another nomination said. “She is hardworking, positive and committed.”
San Ramon Regional officials say that Chou, who is a registered nurse in the hospital’s intensive care unit, is well respected by nurses, doctors and patients alike, in part because of her excellent critical thinking skills and level-headed responses during stressful situations.
Chou was selected to receive the award by an anonymous group of nursing administrators who felt she deserved the award for her outstanding patient care.
