The final phase of the long-anticipated Iron Horse Regional Trail overcrossing at Bollinger Canyon Road in San Ramon is continuing this summer, with construction on the project set to kick off in the coming days following the completion of its planning and design stages.

Construction is projected to be underway for the next 18 to 24 months starting on Monday (July 31) during which lanes will be closed on Bollinger Canyon Road outside of San Ramon City Hall, with a tower in the median of the road to support the overcrossing set to be the first focus of the project.

The long-term lane closures on Bollinger Canyon Road will be for the lanes on each side of the median outside City Hall, with the turning lanes on each side remaining open, according to a construction notice issued by the city this month.

Additional daily, intermittent lane closures are planned for the portion of Bollinger Canyon Road between Alcosta Boulevard and Camino Ramon, as well as reduction in speed limit to 30 mph for traffic within the construction zone.

The north side of the Iron Horse Trail near the construction site will be closed during the duration of construction, with a detour for pedestrians and bicyclists in place, with the south side set to be closed and a detour implemented later on in the construction process.

Occasional night-time road closures are also anticipated for the entire portion of Bollinger Canyon Road within the construction zone, and a detour planned between Alcosta Boulevard and Camino Ramon during those times.

The overcrossing, which is aimed at improving pedestrian safety and traffic flow in the central part of the city, has been in the works for more than a decade. The feasibility study for the project was completed in 2009, followed by the community outreach and preliminary design phase and the environmental phase.

  1. Crazy thought, but why do this while Crow Canyon is such a mess? Why impact both east/west arteries at the same time? Lousy planning.

  2. Great now we have construction on Crow Canyon and. Bollinger major outlets for people living in the Blackbhawk area – great planning – NOT!

  3. Bicycles, building high rises and Bernie Sanders are the three “B”s that San Ramon council cares about. Businesses, tax payers and residents don’t matter.
