The San Ramon Planning Commission is set to resume discussions on the current status of the city’s General Plan update process and next steps at its regular meeting Tuesday, following an initial conversation on the topic two months ago in a joint meeting with the City Council.

The update to the city’s General Plan is set to solidify a vision for city planning through 2040, establishing rules and goals for the planning process aimed at guiding new developments in the growing city in the coming decades.

“It reflects the community’s vision for the future and is intended to provide direction through the year 2040,” city senior planner Cindy Yee wrote in a staff report prepared for the upcoming meeting.

This week’s meeting is set to expand on points raised during the May 30 meeting, and to specifically focus on updating the economic development, growth management, and land use elements of the General Plan.

The previous discussion came on the heels of the release of a draft General Plan Update that was made available on May 24.

City officials first began soliciting community feedback on the General Plan update in 2021 with a series of public workshops and study sessions — 16 total as of this April — with city staff having provided presentations on the process at a number of public meetings and events.

“The workshops, study sessions, and committee meetings provided an overview of the General Plan Housing Element Update, RHNA, required policy and program topics, and provided an opportunity for the community to provide feedback,” Yee said.

The feedback and insight from the outreach period were taken into account in the development of the proposed General Plan update, with a public notice for the upcoming discussion posted online, sent to residents via mail and email, and posted at several sites throughout the city.

City officials completed and adopted the Housing Element portion of the General Plan update in accordance with a state deadline in January, which was certified by state officials in February.

Like the Housing Element update, other portions of the General Plan update will center on bringing current policies into alignment with changes in state laws and regulations, as well as reevaluating and discussing local policies and new issues that might arise in the coming years.

The San Ramon Planning Commission is set to meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday (Aug. 1). The agenda is available here.
