Officials with PG&E are set to join the Danville Town Council at Tuesday night’s regular meeting, following a letter and request from town officials and an announcement last month that the topic would be on the upcoming agenda.

PG&E’s Bay Area Vice President Aaron Johnson and government relations specialist Sarah Yoell are set to provide a service update at the start of the council meeting, following an open letter to the power company Aug. 15 from Town Manager Joe Calabrigo that was spurred by increased complaints from Danville residents about power outages, and an outage that impacted 5,900 residents the day before which continued into the morning the letter was sent.

“Despite ad campaigns that tout PG&E investments in system upgrades to make the distribution system safer and more reliable than ever, I cannot recall any other point in time during my tenure with the town when PG&E’s distribution system and the management of that system have seemed less reliable than they are right now,” wrote Calabrigo, who noted that he has served as town manager for more than 30 years.

PG&E officials issued a response on Aug. 24, pointing to ongoing repairs to infrastructure in Danville and Alamo that they said were expected to be finished within the next 30 days.

“We are actively repairing damaged underground cables and overhead equipment in the Danville and Alamo communities,” PG&E officials said. “As this work is being completed, some of our customers are being provided with electricity through a different circuit. This temporary situation resulted in more customers being impacted when an outage occurred. The electric grid will be returned to normal as repairs are completed over the next 30 days.”

They added that the temporary grid configuration meant that more of the power system was under Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings, which automatically power off when a hazard that could result in a fire is detected.

“While these settings help keep you safe, outages that occur may impact more customers,” PG&E officials said. “As we make these repairs we are continuing to look at options to improve reliability in your neighborhood — without sacrificing safety.”

The Danville Town Council is set to meet at 5 p.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 5). The agenda is available here.
