Emergency personnel converged on a San Ramon shopping center parking lot Wednesday after a report of someone passed out inside a vehicle turned into a hazmat situation that sent two police officers to the hospital for suspected fentanyl exposure, according to city police.

Ultimately two people from out of the area were arrested on suspicion of drug and gun charges and San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District personnel were on scene at the Diablo Plaza decontaminating the vehicle and surrounding area into Wednesday afternoon, according to San Ramon police Lt. Tami Williams.
“Two officers on scene began to feel the effects of what was suspected to be fentanyl located in the suspect vehicle,” Williams said. “These two officers were transported to a local hospital, where they are listed in stable condition and are being monitored by medical personnel.”
The situation unfolded at approximately 11 a.m. Wednesday when San Ramon police officers responded to the parking lot of Safeway at the shopping center at the intersection of Crow Canyon Road and San Ramon Valley Boulevard, according to Williams.
Police had received a call about a person who appeared to be passed out inside a vehicle in the lot, according to Williams.
“Officers conducted a welfare check and during this contact, suspected narcotics were observed in plain view,” the lieutenant said. “The occupants were detained and a subsequent search located additional suspected narcotics with a loaded firearm without a serial number.”
Two officers at the scene, who were not identified publicly, reported symptoms consistent with possible exposure to fentanyl and were subsequently transported to the hospital, according to Williams. The Safeway parking lot was cleared while SRVFPD worked to decontaminate the area.
The two occupants were arrested on suspicion of possessing narcotics, a loaded firearm without a serial number and drug paraphernalia and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility, Williams said. They were described as a 19-year-old man from Vacaville and a 27-year-old woman from Cottonwood, but their names were not released.
