The Danville Police Department issued a warning on social media in recent days against leaving purses and wallets unattended while shopping, despite such thefts in town being rare.

In a Facebook post Friday, DPD advised against leaving valuables unattended for even short periods of time, telling residents to avoid walking away from unsecured purses and wallets in shopping carts, and to be aware of their surroundings and the risks of identity theft when personal items with identifying information are stolen.

“The Police Department has received reports about items being stolen from purses or purses themselves being stolen while people shop at local stores,” DPD officials said on Facebook.

While they noted that thefts were generally rare in town, they advised keeping personal items attached and secured while shopping, staying close to shopping carts and not leaving them unattended, and to use caution when unloading carts. They also suggested that residents “travel light” and consider leaving bags at home or in a locked and concealed portion of their vehicles.

Although the warning comes amid a number of similar cautions from Tri-Valley police departments, pointing to a reported crime trend of wallet thefts from unattended shopping carts at Trader Joe’s locations in particular, a town spokesperson said that there had been no reported thefts from the grocery chain’s Danville location.
