The Big Picture gets us caught up in postseason action! Swimming went through the NCS meet this past weekend, with volleyball going through the first two rounds bringing us to the semifinals and the finals. See how some EBAL athletes fared in some other playoff action.

EBAL Power Rankings has a new No. 1 in EBAL softball as the regular season ended as the teams got ready for the EBAL playoffs in softball and baseball. See if the volleyball rankings changed through the first week of NCS play.

What to Watch has the schedule for the EBAL Baseball and Softball playoffs. NCS Track and Field begin their two weeks of NCS competition in attempts to qualify for state. Finally, the CIF State Swimming/Diving Championships take place in Clovis!

EBAL’s outstanding day at NCS Swimming and Diving Championships

The North Coast Section Swimming and Diving Championships took place this past weekend at the Concord Community Pool, with the East Bay Athletic League having its usual outstanding day, qualifying multiple swimmers for the CIF State Meet.

Power Rankings as of May 13.

EBAL SOFTBALL

1. Carondelet (13-11, 11-2): The Cougars finally get above .500 overall in the season, beating Foothill and Cal in the final week of the season. They take the top seed in the Mountain division and will host Livermore Tuesday in the league playoffs.

2. California (17-7, 10-3): The Grizzlies drop a 9-2 final to Carondelet in the finale of the regular season to fall to second in the Mountain. Plays at Foothill in the first round of the EBAL playoffs on Tuesday.

3. San Ramon Valley (15-7-2, 9-4): The Wolves beat Amador and Monte Vista to close out the season but the loss to California three games back keeps them from the playoffs. Next up, NCS.

4. Foothill (13-7-1, 8-5): It was a bad week for a team headed towards the postseason as the Falcons fell 10-0 to Carondelet, then 4-3 to Amador. Still got the top seed out of the Valley and hosts California on Tuesday in the playoffs.

5. Livermore (16-8, 8-5): The Cowboys won twice in the last week of the season but the loss to Foothill two weeks back cost them the top seed in the Valley. Will travel to Carondelet for the playoffs on Tuesday.

The rest: Granada (13-10, 7-6), Amador Valley (11-13, 5-8), Dougherty Valley (10-9, 5-8), Monte Vista (6-12, 2-11), Dublin (2-17, 0-13).

EBAL BASEBALL

1. Granada (19-5): The Matadors beat Livermore 18-4, then fell 1-0 in the last regular season game. But the Mats are the defending NorCal champs and if you want to be the champ, you have to beat the champ.

2. De La Salle (20-3): The Spartans have won 10 straight and are hitting their stride at the right time. They faced Granada once this year and lost 6-2. Got a feeling we might see them face off at least two more times this year.

3. Foothill (19-5): Closed out the regular season with a sweep of rival Amador Valley, beating the Dons 10-3 and 13-4. Now they get to go to De La Salle for the first round out of the playoffs.

4. Livermore (14-10): The Cowboys end the regular season with a 1-0 win over Granada, which should guarantee Livermore a spot in the NCS playoffs.

5. San Ramon Valley (14-9): The Wolves end the regular season with a pair of wins over Monte Vista and now roll into the EBAL playoffs where they open at Granada.

The rest: Amador Valley (13-11), Dublin (17-7), California (12-11), Monte Vista (5-19), Dougherty Valley (2-20).

EBAL BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

1. Amador Valley (25-10): Beat Deer Valley and Dublin in the first two rounds of the North Coast Section tournament to advance to the semifinals on Tuesday against Las Lomas.

2. San Ramon Valley (22-9): The Wolves got through the first round beating College Park, then fell to Las Lomas 3-2 to be eliminated.

3. De La Salle (24-12): Advanced to the semifinals with wins over Livermore and Moreau Catholic to move into the semifinals and top-seeded Northgate on Tuesday.

4. Foothill (22-12): The Falcons were eliminated by Las Lomas 3-1 in the first round of the NCS D-I playoffs.

5. Dublin (19-8): Got by Bishop O’Dowd in the first round, then were eliminated by Amador Valley.

The rest: Granada (16-11), Livermore (19-15), Dougherty Valley (7-17), California (11-14), Monte Vista (2-13).

Today (May 13)

North Coast Section Volleyball D-I Semifinals – All games at 7 p.m.: No. 5 De La Salle at No. 1 Northgate; No. 15 Las Lomas at No. 3 Amador Valley.

EBAL Softball Playoffs – Both games at 4 p.m.: Livermore at Carondelet; California at Foothill.

EBAL Baseball Playoffs – Both games at 4 p.m.: Foothill at De La Salle; San Ramon Valley at Granada.

Tomorrow (May 14): No events scheduled

Thursday (May 15)

CIF State Diving Championships – At Clovis Olympic Swim Complex (Clovis West High): Boys 9:30 a.m.; Girls 2 p.m.

NCS Volleyball D-I Championship – Match at 7 p.m. Sites TBD: De La Salle-Northgate winner vs. Las Lomas-Amador Valley winner.

EBAL Softball Playoffs – At 4 p.m. Site TBD: Livermore-Carondelet winner vs. California-Foothill winner.

EBAL Baseball Playoffs – At 4 p.m. Site TBD: Foothill-De La Salle winner vs. Granada-San Ramon Valley winner.

Emerald High picks Pangilinan as varsity boys’ basketball coach

Emerald High School has named longtime East Bay coach Ron Pangilinan as the school’s first varsity boys’ basketball head coach, amid some parental unrest regarding the hiring process.

Pleasanton Preps: As softball season sunsets, so too do stellar Foothill careers of Burdick sisters

Whenever the Foothill High season ends this month, it will end the illustrious careers of seniors Kaycie and Sophia Burdick. When the two leave Foothill (Kaycie to play softball at the University of Washington and Sophia to play softball at San Jose State), there will be a massive void to fill. The two were also impactful volleyball players for the Foothill team that went to the CIF State final last season…
