Welcome to the Playbook!

Each week the Playbook will bring you a story about something related to the current sports taking place locally. With 40-plus years of covering the EBAL, the Playbook knows the landscape of local sports and will bring you the ins and outs, as well as the good (and the bad) of prep sports!

The Playbook is delivered each Tuesday into your inbox! It’s free — you just register to get it. Be sure to share with the players and parents of your team so they can get the Playbook each week too! They can do it at danvillesanramon.com.

The Big Picture talks about the passing of legendary and iconic East Bay Athletic League basketball coach Hans de Lannoy. After battling brain cancer for several years, de Lannoy died last week, leaving behind a legacy of former players, students, and lifelong friends. He was one of a kind when it came to not just being a coach but a friend, and one loved by many.

EBAL Power Rankings are done for the regular season. We will do one more ranking following the EBAL playoffs and then the final Winter Sports Power Rankings following the playoffs.

What to Watch sees the EBAL basketball and soccer playoffs this week. See where and when the local teams fight for spots in the North Coast Section playoffs.

Got a great story idea for something coming up in the winter?Let me know at acesmag@aol.com!

Remembering my friend, longtime EBAL coach Hans de Lannoy

“RIP Hans, words could never explain what you meant to so many. Rest assured, your memories and advice you have bestowed upon so many will be carried with us every day.”

Power Rankings as of Feb. 10.

EBAL BOYS’ BASKETBALL

1) San Ramon Valley (19-7, 8-1): The Wolves have been the hottest team in the league, winning eight straight games. After beating Dublin and Monte Vista last week, the Wolves are the top seed in the playoffs.

2) Dougherty Valley (19-7, 7-2): After beating Amador Valley in the next to last game in the regular season, the Wildcats were staring at the top seed for the EBAL playoffs. That didn’t age well as Dublin stepped up and beat Dougherty 64-61.

3) California (22-4, 7-2): Just when the EBAL seemed like it had slid into a rhythm, on the last night of the regular season, the Grizzlies host De La Salle and absolutely drill the Spartans, beating them 67-48. The Grizzlies jump up and are the No. 3 seed.

4) De La Salle (22-4, 7-2): The Spartans cruise through the second half of the season gets blown out of the way with a one-sided lass to California. And just like that, DLS falls to the No. 4 seed in the EBAL playoffs.

5) Dublin (22-4, 6-3): The Gaels came into the week feeling like they would be the No. 5 seed in the playoffs and following a loss to San Ramon Valley before ending the regular season with the win over Dougherty, the No. 5 seed is exactly where they are.

The rest: Amador Valley (18-8, 4-5), Monte Vista (16-10, 4-5), Granada (8-18, 2-7), Foothill (12-14, 1-8), Livermore (14-12, 0-9).

EBAL GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

1) San Ramon Valley (23-3, 9-0): Another year, another regular season title but now the fun starts with the postseason. Will face Carondelet probably 2-3 more times.

2) Carondelet (21-4, 8-1): The Cougars beat a good Cal team 57-50 to finish out the regular season, and now it’s time for the excitement to start — the postseason.

3) California (17-9, 7-2): The Grizzlies ended the season with a 57-50 loss to Carondelet. Easily the third best team in the league, if they avoid the same NCS division as the top two teams expect another good run into the postseason.

4) Dublin (20-5, 6-3): The Gaels seem to beat everyone but the top three teams in league. No shame there. Maybe they can get a D-III berth in NCS and make a run at the title.

5) Dougherty Valley (16-9, 4-5): The Wildcats knocked off Monte Vista two weeks back, so they got the No. 5 spot over the Mustangs.

The rest: Monte Vista (11-14, 4-5), Granada (11-15, 4-5), Amador Valley (8-16, 2-7), Livermore (9-17, 1-8), Foothill (5-20, 0-9).

EBAL BOYS’ SOCCER

1. Dougherty Valley (14-2-2, 9-0-0): The Wildcats beat Amador 3-1 and Dublin 6-2 to run their winning streak to nine games and get the No. 1 seed in this week’s EBAL playoffs.

2. De La Salle (13-3-2, 7-1-1): The Spartans close the regular season with a pair of 4-0 wins over Granada and California. Have the No. 2 seed in the playoffs.

3. Monte Vista (8-4-2, 5-3-1): Beat Livermore but then lost their rivalry game to San Ramon Valley 1-0. Still, the Mustangs were able to hold on to the No. 3 seed.

4. San Ramon Valley (11-6-3, 4-3-2): The Wolves did get the Mustangs 1-0 in the regular season finale but a tie with Dublin, along with a big loss to Granada the week before, leave them with the No. 4 seed.

5. Livermore (8-8-4, 4-3-2): The Cowboys close strong beating Granada 2-1 on the last day of the league to get the No. 5 seed, leaving the Matadors with the No. 6 seed in the playoffs.

The rest: Granada (12-6-1, 4-4-1), California (8-7-7, 2-5-2), Amador Valley (4-11-7, 0-6-3), Dublin (5-7-6, 2-6-1), Foothill (5-11-4, 0-6-3).

EBAL GIRLS’ SOCCER

1. Carondelet (16-2-0, 9-0-0): After three games this year the Cougars had a pair of losses. They have not lost since. This week they beat Granada and California to finish the league season 9-0 (12-2 overall) and get the top seed in the playoffs.

2. San Ramon Valley (10-1-0, 8-1-0): One blemish on the Wolves season, a 2-0 loss to undefeated Carondelet early in the season.

3. Monte Vista (5-4-3, 4-3-2): The Mustangs win three of their final four games to lock up the No. 4 seed in the EBAL Playoffs. The Mustangs beat Amador late in the season to stay a spot in front of them in regular season.

4. Amador Valley (7-3-0, 6-3-0): The Dons end the regular season strong, beating Dougherty Valley and Foothill to finish with the No. 3 seed in the EBAL Playoffs this week.

5. Foothill (7-4-4, 3-4-2): The Falcons get a 3-2 win over Cal the final week of the season to end up with the No. 5 seed in the playoffs, while the Grizzlies are the No. 6 seed.

The rest: California (6-7-4, 3-4-2), Dublin (6-5-3, 2-4-3), Granada (7-4-7, 1-4-4), Dougherty Valley (5-9-1, 1-7-1), Livermore (3-11-1, 1-8-0).

The Amador Valley wrestling team did something not many local teams have done in the last 15 years, and that is beat De La Salle.
