A woman who mistook the accelerator in her car for its brake drove into a grocery store on Wednesday in Martinez, injuring another woman, according to police.

At about 3:45 p.m., police were sent to the Safeway on Alhambra Avenue in Martinez on a report of a vehicle that crashed into the side of the building.

Officers made contact with the driver of the vehicle, a 76-year-old woman, who said she mistook the gas pedal for the brake while trying to park. As a result, her car jumped the curb, went through several potted plants and collided with the east side of the building near the north entrance.

The force of the crash caused an ice machine inside the building to fall and hit a 71-year-old woman who was shopping in the store. She fell and struck her head but was conscious and breathing when first responders arrived, according to police.

The woman driving the car was not injured and police do not believe that drugs or alcohol played any role in the collision. She is cooperating with the investigation, the department said.
