Scarecrow Stroll
The town of Danville’s annual Scarecrow Stroll is kicking off Friday, at which point a map of the more than 20 scarecrows decorated by local businesses and organizations will be made available.
The event aims to “encourage the community to take a leisurely walk through Downtown Danville,” according to a press release from the town on Monday.
“Each participating business puts their creative spin on traditional scarecrows, offering a variety of themes and styles,” organizers said in Monday’s announcement. “From whimsical to spooky, these scarecrows celebrate fall while celebrating all that Downtown Danville has to offer.”
Participants are invited to take selfies with the scarecrows and vote for their favorites starting Friday, with voters being into a weekly raffle for prizes through Nov. 10. More information is available here.
Harvest Hootenanny
Tickets are now available for the upcoming Harvest Hootenanny at Forest Home Farms Historic Park at 19953 San Ramon Valley Boulevard on Oct. 17.
The annual event, now in its third year, is set to feature food and drinks – included in the ticket price – a square dancing demonstration, and the opportunity to explore the historic park including its tractor barn and farm animals.
Country and western attire is strongly encouraged according to event organizers.

O’Neill birthday tribute
Weeks after the end of this year’s Eugene O’Neill Festival, organizers with the foundation by the same name are preparing to celebrate the famed playwright’s birthday at his former home in Danville.
The celebration is set to include a toast to the late playwright and a tour of the Tao House and grounds where he spent the later part of his life living and working, as well as a tasting of locally foraged food from the Las Trampas hills and “artisan elixirs” according to event organizers. An optional guided tour of the Tao House will also be available, as well as the “Sweeping Passions” photo exhibit that was launched during last month’s festival.
The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 16, with a shuttle transporting participants to the Tao House from the Museum of the San Ramon Valley at 10 a.m.

Creek and channel safety
The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors is recognizing October as Creek and Channel Safety Awareness Month with the aim of bolstering the flood control district’s public outreach and education efforts.
“As the rainy season begins, it is important to remember that water levels in our creeks and channels will rise,” officials with the Contra Costa Flood Control and Water Conservation District said in an announcement Thursday.
“The water is cold, swift-moving, and full of debris, so we need to remind our children and friends about the dangers of fast-moving water and the most certain fate that awaits anyone who goes into rain-swollen creeks and channels,” they continued. “Flood control channels are an integral part of our community’s infrastructure and like freeways and railroad tracks, they should NEVER be used for recreation.”
More information on the awareness campaign is available here.
