The SRVUSD Board of Education is poised to wrap up what has been a somewhat tumultuous planning process in developing a budget for the upcoming fiscal year, and is on track to meet the state deadline for finalization pending a vote this week.
Following a public hearing and informational discussion on the topic last week, the board is poised to vote on adopting the proposed budget for the 2025 to 2026 fiscal year, which continues to show the district’s finances stretched thin despite the $24 million budget cut package that was given final approval last week.
While painful, the widespread budget cuts were enacted with the goal of maintaining the district’s fiscal solvency amid ongoing deficit spending and other financial challenges, enabling it to meet some – but not all – of the standards and criteria evaluated in the certification process.
In particular, the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year is set to see its operating revenues and expenditures outside the standard for the next three fiscal years, with deficit spending continuing to leave its mark on that standard. The proposed budget also continues to see a reliance on one-time funds for ongoing expenses.
Meanwhile, continuing challenges loom at the state level amid ongoing stock market volatility, projected increases in unemployment this year, and uncertainty over the future of federal funding as well as litigation from the state against the federal government.
While the upcoming vote on the budget is set to be final, pending certification by county and state officials, additional discussions and potential adjustments are on the horizon following the passage of the state budget by the legislature last week. Any trailer bills to the budget could also be included in the final version adopted by Gov. Gavin Newsom by June 30.
After the state budget is finalized for the next fiscal year, district staff are set to bring any necessary adjustments to the board in July or August, according to a staff report from business services director Evan Miller.

The board is set to vote on adopting its Local Control Accountability and Special Education Local plans for the upcoming fiscal year as part of the budgeting process.
The board is set to discuss appointing an alternative education principal and assistant high school principals in a closed session ahead of the public meeting.
