Pine Valley Middle School in San Ramon was placed on a partial lockdown on Monday afternoon after a student reported being threatened by a non-student, according to authorities.

Police and school officials lifted the “secure” status by the end of the school day after determining there was no immediate threat, authorities said that afternoon. The incident remains under investigation.

“We are grateful for our amazing staff who remained calm and kept students reassured throughout the incident. We also appreciate the swift response and support from our community partners at the San Ramon Police Department,” principal Sandy Kontilis said in an email to the Pine Valley community.

Kontilis explained that Pine Valley was put on “secure” campus status “out of an abundance of caution … because we received information about a possible, unspecified threat against the school” – secure status is not a full lockdown, but limits movement at the school while continuing normal operations, according to the principal.

San Ramon police later confirmed the nature of the reported threat, saying, “Both uniformed and plain clothes officers responded to the school after a student reported being threatened by a non-student.”

“Through the preliminary investigation, it was determined there was no imminent threat at the end of the school day, therefore the secure lockdown was lifted and students were released,” SRPD stated in a Facebook post. “The situation is continuing to be thoroughly investigated. We appreciate the cooperation of school staff, students, and families as we worked to ensure everyone’s safety.”

Kontilis added, “We understand that situations like this can be unsettling for students and families. While it is never our intention to cause concern, the safety of our students and staff is always our highest priority, and decisions like these are made carefully and with great consideration. In these situations, our immediate focus is on ensuring student safety while working to provide accurate information to families as quickly as possible.”
