If diamonds are your field of interest, the Danville Senior Softball League may be for you. Now in its third year, the league continues to grow and is looking for more players.
In 2001, Bob Randall learned the Danville Recreation Department wanted to start a senior softball league for Danville so he volunteered to set it up. It now has one team called the Danville 680, which plays teams from other areas.
“In three years since it’s inception, Danville has struggled but the core team consists of 10 dedicated players,” Randall said. “Our goal is to form four league teams that play at a recreational level.”
The Danville League is open to players in the 50-plus age group. Randall said the average age of members of the Danville 680 team is 64.
“The league plays by U.S. Senior Softball Rules that are designed to avoid contact and injury to old bones,” he explained.
The season is year around, starting in April. The cost is $95 for the year, which does not include uniforms. Danville 680’s team sponsor Pasta Gondola paid for its uniforms.
The home field is at the $4 million all-turf Sycamore Valley sports field near the Danville Post Office on Camino Tassajara.
Every Tuesday and Thursday morning finds the team practicing. “The players come from all walks of life,” said Randall. “This year’s team consists of retired sales managers, real estate agents, general contractors, teachers, government employees, scientists and computer executives.”
In general the players are people who are” young at heart,” he said, “and want to get some exercise playing a fun game and socializing over beer and pizza after the game.”
