Danville baseball star Randy Winn returned home recently as he was traded to the San Francisco Giants from the Seattle Mariners. A graduate of San Ramon Valley High School, Winn was drafted by the Florida Mariners in 1995. From 1997 to 2002 he played with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He has played with the Mariners since 2003. He was also a star baseball and basketball player at Santa Clara University.

Since being acquired by the Giants on July 30, Winn hit his first homerun in a Giants uniform against the Braves for a 5-3 win Aug. 11. The game was tied in the seventh inning and he hit the two-run homer against former Oakland A’s pitcher Tim Hudson to lead the Giants to victory.

He continued his hot hitting exhibition Aug. 15 against the Cincinnati Reds when he became the 21st Giant in franchise history to hit for the cycle. He hit a single, double and homerun in the first five innings, then completed the cycle tripling in the sixth inning and leading the Giants to a 7-3 victory over the Reds. He also adds strong defensive skills at his center field position. Manager Felipe Alou said recently that “he has brought a lot of life to this team.”

Another Danville native, Mark Madsen, also made news as he signed a five-year contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves of the National Basketball Association. The San Ramon Valley High graduate was an All-American at Stanford University and drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2000. He helped the Lakers win two World Championships in 2001 and 2002 before being traded to the Timberwolves.

Madsen is a strong aggressive player; he only played 41 games last year due to a broken thumb and then ruptured a ligament that kept him out the remainder of the season.
