The San Ramon High Cross Country team had a successful day in the recent Adidas Invitational held at Newhall Park in Concord. Head coach Tim Hunter summarizes the day:
After arriving and setting up camp in the Wolves traditional area away from most of the crowds and in the shade and getting through the always exciting process of handing out numbers, the Wolves were ready to race. With over 40 teams signed up for the various races this was set to be the biggest and most competitive Adidas Invitational in the past 10 years.
After some great results from the JV and freshman racers, it was the girls varsity turn to run. This would be the first time this season for the varsity athletes to run their traditional distance of 3 miles. With lead runner Alexis Nordine out with a pool workout injury the group of six would be looking for someone to breakthrough and lead the group on the course. The team got a great start led by Allie Colaco and positioned themselves in the front third of the pack finding themselves with other teams’ No. 1 runners. The group was close together with no one willing to let anyone else go; therefore, good pack running. Coming off the big hill the group remained close together, now led by Danielle Ribera with the rest of the pack within five seconds of her. At the 2-mile mark, a group of five came by at 13:55 all in a line now led by Janelle Jacobs and Katie Prucha, and Kisten Anderson at 14:10 chasing the group. At the finish it was still Janelle Jacobs leading the Wolves coming in at 20:51, with Katie Prucha just behind in 21:02, and Danielle Ribera at 21:04. A whole eight seconds later came Sara Beyers at 21:12 and Allie Colaco at 21:15, and Kirsten Anderson at 22:38 finishing up the team today. A 24-second spread for the scoring five runners is a sign that this group is getting ready for a big November. The girls may have been feeling the effects of the eight-mile run on the previous Friday that their mean coach “suggested” they do. The pack running gained the team a seventh-place finish out of 22 teams – not bad for tired legs!
The last race of the day would be the varsity boys’ 3-mile contest that pitted the Wolves against familiar foes De La Salle, Jesuit and MacFarland of the Central Valley. The Wolves put three sophomores and four juniors on the line to test their mettle at the longer race distance. Led by Brett Gunari, the group was out to a solid start that set them up for a good race. At the 1.5-mile mark the boys were being led by Gunari with the duo of Mitch Lappin and Alex DeLuna close behind. At the 2-mile mark Gunari began to stretch the gap over the others coming by at 11:35, Lappin and DeLuna passing the 2-mile at 11:55 with the other four Wolves past the mark before 12:10. The order of the boys stayed the same at the finish with Gunari flying by at 17:00, and Lappin and DeLuna staying together with 17:38 and 17:40 times respectfully. Next would be Blake Regalia at 18:02 who just caught his teammate Devan Blair who finished in 18:03. Keir Forster at 18:33 and Jake Wiskel at 18:55 would round out the team of seven on this day.
We watched 53 Wolves race the 2- and 3-mile courses. Also we had two teams gain top-4 finishes. We had a number of top 10 finishes as individuals. Plus we had a number of runners race their first race. This was a very successful day.
Football
Monte Vista beat Berkeley 24-10 in a non-conference game. The 3-0 Mustangs were lead by Peter Geurts who ran for two touchdowns and 228 yards. League play begins tonight with an away game against California.
San Ramon also went to 3-0 against Will C. Wood with a 49-14 win. Roy Helu Jr. ran for 198 yards on 28 carries and scored two touchdowns running and two others catching passes. The Wolves will open league play tonight with an away game against Foothill. <@endbullet>n<@$p>
Water Polo
The lady Mustangs and Wolves are in first place in the East Bay Athletic League standings, with San Ramon beating Amador Valley 16-3 and Monte Vista beating Granada. They will face each other Oct. 4.
The Monte Vista boys team went to 3-0 beating Livermore 19-4 and Granada 13-7. Charlie Steffans led the team with five goals against Livermore and six against Granada.
Golf
The lady Wolves went to 3-1 with a win over Cal High. Jennifer Cohen shot her low round of the year with a 37 at the Bridges. Monte Vista beat Amador at Round Hill Country Club. Jane Lee, Sunny Zhang and Jordan Ontiveros all shot 39 leading the team to victory. Currently Monte Vista leads the league and San Ramon is tied for third with Amador Valley; Foothill is in second place.
