Tonight the two Danville high school boys basketball teams will battle it out on court in a crucial game for the East Bay Athletic League championship. The varsity game begins at 7 p.m., at San Ramon Valley High.
On Feb. 15, Monte Vista beat Granada 66-47 to go 17-6 overall and 8-1 in the EBAL. This was the fifth straight win for the Mustangs. Corey Higgins led the Mustangs with 17 points. Two days later, Monte Vista beat Foothill in an important game 57-45, with Higgins leading all scorers with 22 points. The Mustangs are now 18-6 and 9-1 in the EBAL.
The Foothill win gave Monte Vista a one-game lead over San Ramon. The Wolves ran their record to 8-2 in the EBAL and 18-6 overall with a win over Amador Valley 68-52. Mike Kehrig led the Wolves with 20 points.
Girls basketball
The Monte Vista girls basketball team beat Granada 50-45 on Feb. 14 to go 17-6 overall and 7-2 in the EBAL. Caryln Raphel led the Mustangs with 14 points. Later that week, the Lady Mustangs beat Foothill 51-44, with Naveen Rasheed leading the Mustangs with 15 points.
The win tied them with San Ramon for first place in the EBAL with an 8-2 record. San Ramon beat Amador Valley 47-28 to go 18-6 overall and 8-2 in the EBAL. Meghan Yetman led the Wolves with 13 points.
Boys soccer
In the North Coast Section 3-A playoffs on Feb. 15, the game between San Ramon and College Park was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation play and after two 10-minute scoreless overtimes, the exciting game went to a shootout; San Ramon won the shootout 4-3 with Zack Corral scoring the winning goal. San Ramon’s record is now 16-5-3.
In the quarterfinals Feb. 18, San Ramon beat Castro Valley 1-0. Phil Tan scored the winning goal for the Wolves.
Monte Vista received a bye in the first round. In the quarterfinal game they beat Livermore 1-0 to run their record to 19-5-1. Alex Oberlander scored the game-winning goal for the Mustangs.
Both teams advanced to the semifinals played Wednesday, after press time. No. 5-seeded San Ramon was to play No. 1-seeded Richmond at Pinole Valley; the No. 3-seeded Mustangs were to play No. 2-seeded De La Salle.
Girls soccer
In the NCS 3-A quarterfinals, Monte Vista beat Livermore 3-1 to run their record to 18-3-4. Courtney Jones scored all thee goals for the Mustangs.
The Lady Wolves ran their record to 21-2-2 with a win over Castro Valley 2-0. Aubrey Southwick made two saves to earn the shutout for San Ramon.
Both teams advanced to the semifinals Feb. 22, with No. 1-seeded Monte Vista playing No. 4-seeded Foothill, and the No. 3-seeded Lady Wolves playing No. 2-seeded Carondelet.
