Several Danville golfers played in the $120,000 Stead Motors ShootOut at Boundary Oaks Golf Course in Walnut Creek on June 13-16, part of the A.G. Spanos California Golf Tour. The tour began in February and will end with the Tour Championship in August at the Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton.

One of the local players was Jesse Skinner of Danville. Skinner, 29, did not begin playing golf until he was 21 years old and plays out of the Bridges Golf Club in San Ramon.

His wife, Tamara, was following him on the second day of the tournament and “supports his ultimate goal of playing on the Nationwide or PGA Tour.” She said she is his “loyal caddy and supporter” but does not carry any clubs.

“This is his first year on this tour and it is very competitive and challenging,” she said.

Skinner had a first round of 77 and did not make the cut this time in the competitive field of 140 golfers.

Danville golfers Gundy Jones and Josh Williams did make the cut. Brian Smock of Coronado won the tournament by two shots with a score of 14 under par for 4 rounds (67, 70, 70, 67), winning $17,715. Past winners on this tour include current PGA tour pros Todd Fisher of Pleasanton and Aaron Oberholser of San Jose.

“This tour gives these kids a chance to sharpen their skills and learn what it takes to make it on the PGA tour,” said Bob Boldt, former senior tour PGA player and director of golf at Boundary Oaks. “This is the 10th year we have hosted this tournament and it is amazing to see how far these young guys hit the ball.” •
