The Monte Vista boys soccer team drove home its third league win with a shutout performance over Granada on Wednesday last week.
Jeff Penna had four goals and Alex Oberlander had one goal to bring the Mustangs to 5-0 by halftime. Mustang defense staved off Granada for the remainder of the second half. The Mustangs (12-0-4, 3-0-2 EBAL) lead the league with eight shutout games this season.
At San Ramon Valley, the Wolves played an evenly matched Amador to a 1-1 tie, both goals coming in the second half. San Ramon’s Tyler Bell put in the game’s first goal, assisted by Eric Reveal in minute 51:00, but Amador’s Luis Rocha fired back in the 71st minute to tie the game. Wolves’ keeper Tommy Comer recorded five saves. San Ramon Valley’s record is 12-0-1, 2-0-1 EBAL.
Girls soccer
In girls soccer, Hillary Harvey stole the spotlight for San Ramon Valley, kicking in a first-quarter goal that gave the Wolves their 1-0 win over California in their league match last Thursday. Assisted by Bria Park, it was the only goal scored during the heavily defended game. The Wolves (10-2-2, 4-0 EBAL) currently lead the league, with Foothill and Monte Vista (8-3-5, 2-1-2 EBAL) close behind.
Monte Vista girls last week settled for a 2-2 tie against Livermore. Mustangs Kate Mogannam and Carmy Senemar gave the Mustangs a first-quarter lead but Cowboy player Mary Laura put in a goal during minute 63 to tie the game. Monte Vista’s Taylor Gonzales recorded four saves during the game.
Girls basketball
The undefeated Monte Vista girls basketball team tipped off its first week of league play, chalking in two more wins, this time against Foothill and Amador. The Jan. 8 Foothill game went 55-33 in the Mustangs favor. On Friday, the girls took home an even bigger 50-27 win over Amador. San Ramon Valley girls struggled in the first week, falling 49-62 to Granada and 50-55 to Livermore.
Boys basketball
In boys basketball, both local high school teams stood up to the first round of league play and will continue to contend for the league title. San Ramon Valley won 64-59 at Granada on Jan. 8, and 74-33 at Livermore on Jan. 12.
Monte Vista boys took down California High with a 48-36 win at home, before earning a road game win 47-44 over Amador.
