The Amador Valley High girls’ water polo team opened the East Bay Athletic League play with a resounding 17-2 win over Granada, thanks in large part to 10 goals from senior captain Susan Swyers.
Dorian Selway and Addie Drain split the first four goals of the match for the Dons before Swyers took over the game.
Swyers has been an impact player for Amador since she was a freshman. In addition to her 10 goals, she had three assists and seven steals.
Selway finished with four goals and had a pair of assists. Drain finished with three goals, with Claire Kunich adding a pair of assists. Amador goalie Deepika Suresh had a pair of saves.
The weekend was a little tougher for the Dons as they took part in the Acalanes tournament.
In the first game the Dons fell 11-7 to Liberty.
Swyers had six goals and six steals for the Dons. Abigail Jones scored one goal, and Zahra Alami had three saves. Suresh kept the Dons in the game with eight saves.
In the second game of the tournament, the Dons fell to Rio Americana 14-6.
This time Swyers scored four goals and made four steals. Selway added a goal as did Alami. Drain checked in with a pair of assists and Suresh had five saves for the Dons.
On day two, the Dons fell 9-8 to Valley Christian-San Jose.
Swyers had five goals with Drain, Alami, and Caitlin Brown all scoring once. Suresh again kept the Dons in the game with nine saves.
The final game of the tournament was another tough 9-8 loss, this one to St. Ignatius.
Swyers scored seven goals and added five steals in the game. Drain had the other goal and Brown had three assists.
Suresh might have been the player of the game with 13 saves against the loaded and relentless St. Ignatius attack.
Foothill girls’ volleyball
It’s not as important how you start the season, as compared to how you finish at the end of the year.
Last year the Falcons opened the season 0-2 and advanced all the way to the CIF State finals, finishing second in all of California.
This year the start of the season has been similar, with the Falcons dropping three matches before getting their first win.
The first week of the season Foothill fell 3-0 to James Logan, then 3-1 to Branson.
The second week saw the Falcons fall to Campolindo 20-25, 13-25, 23-25. The highlights for the Falcons came from Brooke Stedman (10 assists, 4 kills, 4 blocks), Paige Nelson (8 kills, 5 assists) and Ale Sioco (11 digs, 4 service points).
The first win of the season came when Foothill beat Emerald 25-9, 25-10, 25-9.
Leading the way in the win were Danielle Yeh (15 assists, 8 service points), Serena Wu (11 service pts, 5 aces) and Sahej Toor (5 kills, 1 block). EBAL play begins this week.
Football
Foothill righted the ship in the second week of the season while Amador Valley – still fighting the injury bug – dropped its second straight game.
After dropping their first game, the Falcons bounced back with a decisive 35-19 win over Castro Valley. This week the Falcons face a Kennedy team that is 2-0, having beaten Mt. Eden and American.
Amador has several key players out with injuries, and it has cost them, falling 14-10 on the road at Monterey Trail in Elk Grove.
This week the Dons will start to get healthy and play their first home game, hosting Downey of Modesto, a team they lost to 47-36 last year. Downey is 1-2 this year, but the Knights are averaging 32 points a game.
Results needed
If you are wondering why your athlete’s results are not in here, it’s because you are not helping get the results turned in each week. Before you fire off an email complaining, ask yourself if you did all you can.
Any questions, shoot me an email asking how you can help.
