And the Playbook jinx continues…

One week after writing about the Amador Valley football team getting the shaft in the North Coast Section seedings meeting, receiving the No. 7 seed in Division II play behind two teams the Dons beat this year, their season ended with a 24-14 loss to Monte Vista in the first round.

Back on Halloween night, the Dons got the better of the Mustangs, winning 35-14. But this time, the Mustangs flipped the script.

The loss brings a close to the local coaching career of Amador head coach Danny Jones. Jones and his family are moving to Idaho where he will eventually head the program at a new high school.

Jones coached the Dons to NCS and CIF NorCal titles last year and a berth in a CIF State Bowl game.

Now Monte Vista will take part in an all-East Bay Athletic League semifinal at sections, playing host to California, a team the Mustangs beat 34-13 earlier in the season.

It was the first loss of the season for Cal after the Grizzlies started 7-0. It was also the first of three straight losses for Cal to close out the regular season.

It’s a losing streak they put to bed last week with a 24-23 win at a dangerous American Canyon team.

With the win, Monte Vista broke a two-game losing streak.

The winner earns a spot in the NCS D-II title game against the winner of top-seeded Campolindo and No. 4 seed Clayton Valley.

Livermore was the No. 8 seed and traveled to top-seeded Campolindo. The Cowboys gave the Cougars all they could handle before falling 28-26.

A team to watch seems to be Granada, as the Mats were seeded No. 4 in the D-IV field. They opened with a 13-7 win over No. 5 seed Deer Valley. Next up Granada has a meeting at top-seeded Hayward Friday night at 7 p.m.

A common opponent is San Ramon Valley as the Wolves played the two teams earlier in the season, beating Hayward 44-7, then Granada 49-13 the next week.

Two EBAL teams took part in the Open/D-I tournament and they played each other in the first round. Top-seeded De La Salle beat San Ramon Valley 42-0 in the first round.

The Spartans move on to face Pittsburg on Friday night at Diablo Valley College in a 7 p.m. game.

In the D-III tournament, Dublin, who had not played since Oct. 24, fell to No. 3 seed El Cerrito 24-7 to end the Gaels’ season.

The EBAL took the girls’ D-I and D-II titles last weekend.

San Ramon Valley won the D-I title with a 15-10 win over Las Lomas, with Amador Valley beating Alhambra 9-7 in D-II. Both the Wolves and the Dons were top-seeded in their divisions.

CIF NorCal girls’ golf

Lily Peng of Carondelet and Erin Lee of Dougherty Valley were the top two finishers in CIF NorCal tournament on Nov. 10 at the Berkeley Country Club.

Peng shot a 4-under 68, with Lee on shot back at 69. Carondelet was third in the team competition with 410. Stevenson of Pebble Beach was the winner at 380 and Granite Bay was second at 401.

The top three teams advanced to the CIF State Tournament set for Wednesday (Nov. 19) at Poppy Hills. Joining Peng and the Cougars at state will be Lee and Cindy Yuan of Athenian as individuals not on advancing teams. Yuan was 11th with a 75.

Team scores: Stevenson 380, Granite Bay 401, Carondelet 410, Monta Vista (Cupertino) 411, Valley Christian (San Jose) 411, Dougherty Valley 428, Oak Ridge 433, Dublin 456, Whitney 481, Lowell 495, Shasta 565 and University Prep 626.

Carondelet individuals: Peng 68, Katherine Keith 73, Madison Delumen 84, Sahana Duggal 92, Sawyer Fogel 93 and Madison Mathis 99.
