Rep. Mark DeSaulnier (D-Concord) was named top Democrat of the House Committee on Ethics last week.

Having served on the committee since 2023, DeSaulnier was appointed to ranking member on the committee for the 119th Congress by Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries.

“I am honored to be named Ranking Member of the House Ethics Committee and grateful to Leader Jeffries for the opportunity to lead this body in our work to increase accountability, transparency, and integrity throughout Congress,” DeSaulnier said in a statement Feb. 13.

As ranking member, he will guide Democrats within the ethics committee, which is composed of five members from each of the two national political parties and chaired by a member from the party holding a majority in the House.

Responsibilities of the committee include providing ethics training to House members, officers and employees as well as answering their ethics-related questions; investigating and adjudicating any alleged violations of the House rules or any related statutes by members, officers or employees as well as reviewing financial disclosure statements filed by members, candidates, senior staff, and shared staff, according to a statement from DeSaulnier’s office.

“As a public servant, I have been shaped by my experience as the son of a superior court judge accused of unethical behavior – which has motivated me to dedicate myself to restoring the public’s trust in Congress,” DeSaulnier said. “I look forward to bringing this experience and ethos to my leadership on the Committee.”
