Public transit enthusiasts are inviting the Bay Area community to join them on Sunday for the annual BART speedrun, an attempt to travel to every BART station as fast as possible, to celebrate the agency’s 54th birthday and the start of Transit Month.
Speedrunners will attempt to step foot in all 50 BART in about six hours in an event organized by two transit advocacy groups, the California High School Transit Alliance and the New Urbanism Initiative. The event starts at 10:37 a.m. from the Berryessa-North San Jose Station on Sunday and will end in Antioch.
Last year, organizers reported 70 people turned out for the event, purportedly the largest group of its kind to speedrun any transit agency. Organizers and BART officials plan to make this experience more attractive by offering games, prizes, and a sense of community on board.
“I love seeing everyone show up to speedrun BART, people of all ages, backgrounds, and locations in the Bay Area,” said Harvy Chang, an organizer and self-described BART speedrunning pro. “Fun community events like large speedruns can motivate the public to ride transit and help us move toward a more sustainable future with fewer cars and more environmentally friendly transportation.”
The current speed record was set in October 2024, by a pair who finished in 5 hours, 9 minutes, and 35 seconds.
BART encourages people to RSVP so the agency can have a headcount of who is participating. They also make note that riders should have $12.15 for fare, use the restroom, and bring any other essentials they may need.
