Sutter VNA & Hospice will be issuing flu shots and pneumonia shots to the public. Flu shots are $25 and pneumonia shots are $35. Residents covered by Medicare Part B will not be charged. Proceeds will be given to help support end of life hospice care for local patients.

Three flu clinics will be held in Danville:

* Oct. 29 and Nov. 12, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Andronico’s Market, 345 Railroad Ave.

* Nov. 19, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Navlet’s Garden Center, 800 Camino Ramon

Those who are at highest risk for complications from the flu include people 65 years or older; 6-23-month-old children; pregnant women; and residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities. The Centers for Disease Control recently added people with respiratory problems as a new group that should get vaccinated every year. For more information on flu clinic locations, call (800) 500-2400.

On average, 5-20 percent of the population gets the flu each year and 36,000 people die from it. People who are not at high risk but who work with members of the high-risk population are also urged to get flu vaccinations. A new flu shot is needed every year.

People who should not receive a flu shot include those who are allergic to chicken eggs, are ill or have a fever at the time they wish to receive the flu vaccine, and children less than 6 months of age.
