Being realistic about Veterans Hall
Dear Editor:
I found your Sept. 15 editorial on the Danville Veterans/Legion Hall both balanced and thought provoking. I happened to attend an event at the new Walnut Creek-Lafayette, 9,100-square-foot, $7.8 million Veterans Hall near downtown Lafayette, which our Mayor Karen Stepper also attended, several months ago. I found the building to be both beautiful and functional.
My experience as an engineer, and nearly four-year member of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District Measure A Citizens’ Oversight Committee, brings me to the conclusion that, unlike the Museum of the San Ramon Valley, or the Shuey-Povda house, it is financially impractical to move or renovate the Danville Veterans/Legion Hall. Action does need to be taken soon because of issues of ADA non-compliance, high upkeep costs and poor acoustics.
I share our town’s sentiment of avoiding seeing such a historic building demolished, given Danville’s emphasis on restoring such buildings. I’m an economic realist, however, and advocate demolition and building a modern Veterans Legion Hall nearby.
