Danville has a reputation as a good place to raise a family but last week’s cover story pointed out the existence of a singles scene, too. This is good news for those who would like their grown children to live here or who are newly entering the single state themselves. The 2000 Census showed that 70 percent of Danville adults are married. So the number of unmarried adults is not small.

The census also noted that of the total population of 41,715 residents in Danville, 48.5 percent are male and 28.6 percent are under 18. In Alamo, the 2000 population of 15,626 was almost equally divided among the sexes and included 27.6 percent under 18, with 78.1 percent of Alamo’s households being married couples living together.

One noteworthy statement in last week’s story was that some singles prefer venues in Danville rather than the busier nightlife in Walnut Creek because they are more likely to run into people they know here. It truly does seem to be the town that has everything, despite what some seniors said in another story last week. They were unhappy that the town does not offer more services and activities aimed directly at the aging population. While the 2000 Census listed the Danville population over 65 at 10.3 percent, that segment of the population in Alamo came in at 12.2 percent, and everyone seems to agree these numbers are rising.

This area is fairly homogenous. It’s good to know there is some diversity in marital status and age – and politics. Contributions to political candidates in the 2004 race broke out to $203,387 going to Democratic candidates, and $178,229 going to Republicans, although $101,404 went to re-elect President Bush.

Another interesting observation was made last week by dating coach Jeannine Kaiser: Two halves don’t make a whole; two wholes make a whole. That’s the real aim for any community, so each person can contribute in a positive way whether married, single, young or old.
