A driver died after their SUV crashed into a tree alongside Camino Tassajara in Danville on Friday night, town police confirmed.
The crash occurred just before 9 p.m. on eastbound Camino Tassajara east Messian Place — not far from the Sycamore Valley Road intersection — when a 2000 Toyota 4Runner went off the thoroughfare for unknown reasons and struck a tree, according to the Danville Police Department.
The driver, who was the sole occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Their identity has not yet been released publicly, with family notifications still pending.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office Injury and Major Protocol Accident Callout Team (IMPACT) team was at the scene for hours overnight, with the eastbound side closed for about six hours between Messian Place and Shady Creek Drive, police said.

I was driving eastbound on Camino Tassajara when I reached the closure and made a U-turn to detour. At that time, there was a tow truck pointed *westbound* in the eastbound lane, with a US Postal Service jeep attached, and appearing to be about to remove that vehicle from the area. The Jeep didn’t appear to have any damage on the side I could see, but it was right next to the road closure.
