It’s time for another week of the Tri-Valley Preps Playbook, your inside source for all things sports when it comes to the East Bay Athletic League. Join me each week for some honest feelings about the good, the bad and the ugly side of high school athletics!

The Big Picture looks at the EBAL football teams as we are halfway through the 2024 season! How are the Mountain and Valley divisions shaping as we approach league play? The Mountain team are getting it done early!

EBAL Power Rankings have some minor changes in the middle of the ranks. Check out who stands where as we are halfway through both the football and volleyball seasons.

What to Watch has some interesting games this week as there are a few Mountain vs. Valley EBAL football games on Friday, as well as one decent volleyball game. See who, when, and where the games are taking place.

San Ramon Valley and Foothill are class of EBAL football divisions, so far

We have one more week until East Bay Athletic League play begins, so let’s run through the two divisions and see how teams are shaking out at the midway point in their seasons.


Power Rankings as of Oct. 1.

EBAL FOOTBALL

Mountain Division

1. San Ramon Valley (5-0): The Wolves continue to hit on all cylinders, beating Hayward 48-0. The Wolves are scoring 34.4 points per game while giving up 9.2 a game. This week: at Granada, 7 p.m.

2. California (5-0): The Grizzlies stay perfect with a 35-10 win over Granada from the Valley division of the EBAL. The offense is putting up 39.2 points per game. This week: at Livermore, 7:15 p.m.

3. Monte Vista (4-1): The Mustangs rolled again, going on the road to beat Antioch 37-8. Another good offensive performance as the Mustangs are scoring 32 points per game. This week: at Dublin, 7 p.m.

4. Amador Valley (2-3): The Dons got their second win of the season by pulling out a 24-23 thriller over Acalanes. This week: at Foothill, 7 p.m.

Valley Division

1. Foothill (3-2): The Falcons dropped a tough 52-45 game to unbeaten Half Moon Bay. This week: vs. Amador Valley, 7 p.m.

2. Livermore (3-2): The Cowboys became at the third EBAL team to lose to Heritage, falling 42-28. This week: vs. California, 7:15 p.m.

3. Granada (2-3): The Matadors faced an unbeaten Cal Hi team and fell 35-10. This week: vs. San Ramon Valley, 7 p.m.

4. Dougherty Valley (2-3): Fell on the road at Deer Valley 28-21. The Wildcats are playing some decent football. This week: at Piedmont, 7 p.m.

5. Dublin (1-4): The Gaels got their first win of the season, shutting out Freedom 16-0. This week: vs. Monte Vista, 7 p.m.

*** De La Salle is not included in the regular rankings. De La Salle (5-0): Gave a very good El Cerrito its first loss of the year, winning 35-14.

EBAL GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Mountain Division

1. Carondelet (15-4, 6-0): Big week for the Cougars as they knock Foothill 3-2 to start the week, then sweep Dublin to end the week.

2. San Ramon Valley (9-3, 5-1): The Wolves stay one game back of Carondelet with wins over Dougherty Valley and Monte Vista.

3. Monte Vista (7-6, 4-2): The Mustangs pick up a big win against California to jump a spot but ended the week with a 3-0 loss to San Ramon Valley.

4. California (14-8, 3-3): The Grizzlies spilt matches last week, losing to Monte Vista and sweeping Dougherty Valley. Drops below the Mustangs in the rankings.

5. Dougherty Valley (7-10, 1-5): More tough sledding for the Wildcats as they fall to San Ramon Valley and California.

Valley Division

1. Foothill (15-5, 4-2): The Falcons drop a 3-2 thriller to Carondelet to start the week, then come back to sweep Amador to complete the first half of the season.

2. Dublin (6-8, 3-3): The Gaels beat Livermore but fell to Carondelet and stay at No. 2 by virtue of their win over Amador.

3. Amador Valley (10-8, 3-3): The Dons sweep Granada to start the week but then get swept by Foothill to end the week.

4. Granada (5-11, 1-5): The Matadors get their first league win beating Livermore and move up a spot.

5. Livermore (3-10, 0-6): The Cowboys fall to Dublin and Granada.


Tuesday, Oct. 1 – EBAL Girls’ volleyball: San Ramon Valley at California, 6 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 4 – Football: Amador Valley at Foothill, San Ramon Valley at Granada, Dougherty Valley at Piedmont, 7 p.m.; Monte Vista at Dublin, California at Livermore, 7:15 p.m.
