As Danville residents gear up for patriotic presentations and ceremonies, Roving Reporter Stan Wharton went to the Crow Canyon Country Club to ask veterans As a vet, what does Veterans Day mean for you?
Mark Mason, Retired sales manager: I was in the Army and served in Vietnam. My dad enlisted at age 34 in WWII. My father-in-law served in North Africa and Italy in WWII. My uncle was in the Battle of the Bulge, and I remember when I was a kid I used to look through all his war souvenirs from Germany in his basement. I’ll definitely reflect on this on 11-11-11.
Bill Nelson, Retired Lawrence Livermore Lab engineer: As a seaman recruit in 1951 I went on active duty in 1952 during the Korean War. I went into flight training and was commissioned in 1954 and got my wings. I served on the USS Boxer in a flight squadron. I retired as a captain USNR. This 11-11-11 I will remember all my old friends from the service and will be reminded that there’s still a small number of people providing freedom for our large population. It’s also my wife’s birthday.
Tom Schramm, Retired VP for VISA: Last year we put on a gathering for veterans of all wars at (Crow Canyon Country Club) to honor them on Veterans Day. I served in the US Air Force from 1958 to 1963. This year on 11-11-11 I’ll be attending my mother-in-law’s Veterans Day parade in Fresno. She’s the chairman. Veterans Day means being thankful we have people that are willing to give their life for their country. They should never be forgotten.
Dave Templeton, Poker dealer for the World Series of Poker: I served in the US Army in Germany, and my son, Greg, served in Iraq before the Army sent him back to finish college at Cal State East Bay, and then he will serve again as an officer. I am proud of him and all those who served, including both of his grandfathers who served in the US Army in WWII. On Veterans Day we will honor all those who served, especially those who didn’t make it back home.
Ken Cherry, Retired business owner: I served in Korea and Japan during the Korean War. As a vet, I feel we and Vietnam vets weren’t looked upon the same heroic way as returning WWII vets. It’s important that all newer generations honor previous ones that served our country no matter what conflict they were in.
I give thanks to ALL who served our country, in peace time and in wars. FREEDOM is NOT free. Many thanks for those who serve today. Retired Storekeeper Chief Petty Officer, USN. God bless our Veterans and the USA! Great stories guys, I enjoyed them!
