The Kiwanis Club of San Ramon Valley recently distributed $38,650 to 27 local and regional nonprofits.

Of the more than two dozen nonprofit organizations chosen this year, five are first time recipients of grants from Kiwanis SRV, according to a press release from the organization.

These nonprofits address societal and individual issues including hunger, homelessness, mental health, literacy, foster care, prescription drug abuse, cancer diagnoses, youth volunteerism, and living with physical, intellectual, or developmental disabilities, among other causes.

Among the awarded nonprofits is Culinary Angels, which provides free, nutritious meals and nutrition education to individuals undergoing cancer treatment.

“This grant completes a circle of care—where local love turns into healing,” said Culinary Angels board member Ellen Bozzo in the press release. “At Culinary Angels, our soups, broths, and nourishing meals do more than feed; they offer strength to cancer patients and relief to caregivers. We will use this grant  to not only deliver food, but also deliver hope—reminding our recipients that they are not alone. From Kiwanis to local farms and volunteers, it’s all love in action.”

Through its affiliated foundation the San Ramon Valley Kiwanis Foundation, Kiwanis SRV has presented grants totaling more than $1,150,000 to more than 120 Tri-Valley area nonprofit organizations over the years.

Kiwanis SRV started its grants program in 1995 and has been holding its annual Spring Grants Breakfast since 2001. The Grants Breakfast – which is attended by Kiwanis members, grant recipients, and invited guests – allows local nonprofits to showcase the vital work they do for the Tri-Valley community.

Grant recipients spoke of the partnerships among many of the nonprofits in the room during the May 22 breakfast event, which effectively doubles and triples the impact of their grants by extending services to people served by partner nonprofits.

While based in Danville, Kiwanis SRV aids nonprofits that serve the needs of the entire San Ramon Valley and neighboring communities. The club’s funds raised by the annual Kiwanis Danville 4th of July Parade are directed toward the Grants Program, allowing parade sponsorships to fund projects and programs that might otherwise go unrealized.

“This is the essence of Kiwanis Club of San Ramon Valley—who we are and what we do,” said David Stegman, a member of Kiwanis SRV since 1971. “What you see at our grants breakfasts is a joyful celebration of people and organizations that model kindness, compassion, and dedication to the people they serve. And while the recipients are thankful to us for the grants, we are so grateful to them for their work on behalf of children, youth, adults, and families in need. This is a great way to start the day.”
