Law enforcement finally caught up with two suspects they say are responsible for multiple cases of auto burglaries in Contra Costa County, the Lafayette Police Department said last week.

On Tuesday (Oct. 13) at about 11:15 a.m., police in Orinda received a report of an auto burglary. Officers learned that suspects in an Acura RDX stole tools from a work truck. The same Acura was allegedly linked to auto burglaries in Lafayette and Alamo over the last few weeks, according to the department.

An officer in Lafayette spotted the Acura on Tuesday at about 11:45 a.m. in a residential area. The Acura fled from police and a pursuit was initiated but was ended when the suspect vehicle entered state Route 24 at Acalanes Road going the wrong direction. Officers eventually lost sight of the vehicle.

Minutes later, Lafayette police were dispatched to a grand theft of tools from a construction worker’s vehicle.

A California Highway Patrol helicopter later located the Acura driving recklessly on Oakland streets before it parked in front of a home on the 7200 block of Fresno Street, Lafayette police said. The occupants of the vehicle entered a property.

Oakland officers were able to take two suspects into custody and a search of the Acura allegedly resulted in the recovery of stolen property from the auto burglaries that happened in Lafayette and Orinda. Officers searched the property as well and allegedly found additional evidence.

Arrested and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility were Oakland residents Joel Hernandez-Lobatos, 23, and Urubiel Hernandez-Lobatos, 31.

Joel Hernandez-Lobatos was booked on suspicion of grand theft, conspiracy, possession of stolen property, and drug possession. Urubiel Hernandez-Lobatos was booked on suspicion of grand theft, conspiracy, felony evading, vehicle theft, possession of stolen property and possession of drug paraphernalia.
