More than 9,100 runners, joggers and walkers participated in the 30th annual Run for Education on Oct. 13. Formerly known as Primo’s Run, the race is the largest and most visible fundraiser conducted by the San Ramon Valley Education Foundation.
The Run consisted of a fun run, 5K and half marathon, and race results are now live. Hayward resident Ivan Medina was the half marathon race leader, finishing at 1:14:51; Dublin resident Charles Michael was less than three minutes behind and came in second. Danville’s Jason Intravaia took first overall in the 5K run, completing the course in 15 minutes; San Ramon’s Jesse Zipursky took second with a 16 minute, 17 second finish time.
Both races began in front of Iron Horse Middle School and headed north before turning onto Norris Canyon Road. The 5K track circling around onto Camino Ramon and Bollinger Canyon Road while the half marathon continued down through Bishop Ranch and up Executive Parkway before rejoining the course near Bishop Ranch 7.
The half marathon also included a special Clydesdale category for larger runners. Top female winners were Fremont resident Kelly Tarkowski in first place with a 1:40:05 finish time and Pleasanton’s Melanie Grossheider following at 2:13. Martinez resident Cliff West took first in the male category, finishing at 1:36 with San Jose’s Michael Branca behind by one minute, 46 seconds.
Money raised for the race is distributed to the schools in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. PTAs also partner with the foundation to get runners and receive contributions for their schools in “school site” contests. The school with the most number of registered runners registered by noon on Oct. 12 won $250; the school with the highest percentage increase in runner registration by the same date also won $250. Registered middle and high school runners entered to win a live performance by local band Rundown Radio at a party.
Rundown Radio also performed in Iron Horse Middle School’s parking lot as racers crossed the finish line.
