The Museum on Main is hoping to help residents of all ages become more aware of and involved in the history of Pleasanton through its upcoming summer schedule of events.
The programming centers on the return of its popular experiential Family Days outside in front the downtown museum from June to September, along with a fresh set of storytelling in the field as part of the Charles Huff Free Walking Tour Series — named in honor of the late local historian and architect who often led similar tours himself.
“For each Family Day, we aim to provide families with fun, educational and hands-on activities during the long summer days,” said Rachel Brickell, education director for the museum.
“On the (walking) tour, attendees will explore Pleasanton’s various historical neighborhoods and learn about the architecture and backstories of some of the town’s most notable buildings,” museum officials added in a recent press release.
The first Family Day is scheduled for June 1 around the theme of “Old Time Toys and Games” — offering kids and their parents or grandparents the chance to play with older wooden toys, retro toys and optical illusion toys, museum officials said. Participants will also be able to make a toy of their own.
Like all of the Family Days this year, the initial one will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will be held in conjunction with the Pleasanton Downtown Association’s First Weekends on Main event.
The other Family Days themes are “Retro Pleasanton” (“step back into 1950s Main Street”) on July 6, “Explore Nature with East Bay Parks” on Aug. 3 and “Celebrate Community” (a cultural diversity celebration in partnership with the Uyghur community) on Sept. 7.
The 2024 Charles Huff Free Walking Tour Series also kicks off in June, with each installment starting at 9 a.m. in front of the museum and lasting about two hours. They will go off rain or shine, and comfortable shoes and a hat are recommended, according to museum reps.
The schedule is: “A Storied Past: Exploring the Buildings in Downtown Pleasanton” on June 19 and June 22, “If These Walls Could Talk: Exploring Downtown’s Historic St. Mary Neighborhood” on July 13 and July 17, “If These Walls Could Talk: Exploring Downtown’s Historic Second Street Neighborhood” on Aug. 10 and Aug. 21, and “A Storied Past: Exploring the Buildings in Downtown Pleasanton” again Sept. 19 and Sept. 21.
