Physicist, writer and “Star Trek” science adviser Erin Macdonald is appearing at the Bankhead Theater early next month to close out Livermore Valley Arts’ 2024-25 Rae Dorough Speaker Series.
A “rocket scientist by day, warp drive expert by night”, Macdonald has attained a reputation as a “leading voice in science communication” throughout her career as an astrophysicist, educator, public speaker and author, according to LVA officials. But “Dr. Erin” is now best-known for her work consulting for the “Star Trek” franchise during the past six years.
“Bringing her expertise in gravitational astrophysics to the forefront as the science adviser for Star Trek, she ensures scientific accuracy while bridging the gap between science and pop culture,” LVA reps said in a press release. “Audiences will not want to miss this chance to hear from Dr. Macdonald as she shares her insights on the universe’s mysteries and the fascinating world of science fiction.”
A Colorado native, Macdonald completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder and earned her Ph.D. from the University of Glasgow in Scotland at age 25. She did post-doctoral research on gravitational waves and went on to teach at the college level, according to LVA.
She entered the world of entertainment by writing and narrating science podcasts, publishing original books and founding Spacetime Productions — in addition to the science adviser work she began with the “Star Trek” franchise in 2019.
Macdonald’s matinee appearance at the downtown Livermore theater is set for 3 p.m. May 4. For tickets and more information, visit livermorearts.org.
