‘The Shape of Things’ exhibit

San Ramon officials, community members, and art aficionados are set to gather this month for the opening reception of this year’s fall juried art show at the Lindsay Dirkx Brown Gallery in the San Ramon Community Center.

“From literal geometry to abstract patterns, from organic silhouettes to manmade architecture, this show explores how shape serves as both a foundation and a language in artistic expression,” exhibit organizers said in a call for artists earlier this year.

The reception is set for Nov. 15 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. More information is available here.

“Puzzle Mania” talk

Local fans of the New York Times’ crossword puzzles and other word games are set to have a chance to meet the man behind its popular games pages this month, and to obtain a new treasure trove of word games that aren’t linked to the daily paper.

Joel Fagliano, New York Times’ lead games editor and force behind the new “Puzzle Mania” book is set for an appearance at Rakestraw Books in Danville Nov. 19 at 2 p.m.

“Whether you’re new to puzzles or a solving savant, Puzzle Mania! is a joyful workout for your brain, a cure for boredom, and an invitation to friendly (or not-so-friendly) competition,” book promoters said in an announcement.
