The haunted happenings in Hawkins are getting a musical twist in Livermore the next two weekends with “Stranger Sings!” onstage for the spooky season.
The Las Positas College theater department is presenting eight performances of the musical spoof of “Stranger Things”, the Netflix series that captured audiences over the past decade, following the adventures of Eleven, Mike, Will, Hopper and more in the fictional small town in Indiana and the Upside Down parallel dimension.
“I find ‘Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical’ to be the perfect theatrical comedy that lovingly pokes fun at the popular TV show, while cranking up the nostalgia dial of the ’80s to the max,” director Vinh G. Nguyen said in a press release from the community college.
“Dust off your leg warmers, grab your Eggo waffles, and prepare for a nostalgic trip back to 1983,” LPC officials stated. “Packed with synth-pop tunes, excessive neon, and a healthy dose of irreverent humor, Stranger Sings! subverts the iconic first season of the show with dancing demogorgons, teenage angst, and justice for everyone’s favorite neglected character, Barb.”
Staged in the Barbara Mertes Center for the Arts Black Box Theater, the musical is described as an adult-oriented spoof that makes full use of the intimate venue for “a night of sharp wit, mature jokes, and brilliant musical numbers executed by the talented cast”.
The show features 14 actors from LPC: Lars De La Rosa, Kyle Sullivan, Chris Phalen, Carter Holcomb, Eleonora Layne, Carly Hillen, Luke Homa, Laura Ferreira, Natasha McTiernan, Mason Neto, Emma Sterling, Viv Owens, Hannah Burroughs and Diana Plattner.
Scheduled to debut this Thursday (Oct. 29), “Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical” will see Friday and Saturday evening performances and three weekend matinee shows through Nov. 8 at the college at 3000 Campus Hill Drive in Livermore. The play is intended for mature audiences, organizers said.

The college’s music department is also presenting a student performance next week as LPC Vocal Ensembles – directed by Andreas Preponis – have their fall concert next Thursday (Nov. 5) at 7 p.m., sharing the stage with New York Voices on the group’s final tour after 38 years.
“This iconic quartet has been the north star for Vocal Jazz educators, students, and enthusiasts around the world,” LPC officials said of New York Voices. “Their song catalogue includes swing classics, Brazilian jazz, soulful originals, and creative reinventions of contemporary tunes by artists such as Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, and many more.”
