The path to healing can start with a tune.

Music can be a very effective tool in providing relief from struggles. Through my experiences volunteering to play music for those with family in the hospital, I have seen firsthand the healing capabilities of music. Whether it be providing a brief window into the past or a distraction from the present, music has the ability to bring relief to those who need it.

A few months ago, I finished playing “Moon River,” where a woman came up to me to discuss how she had played the same song in a band when she was younger. A simple melody had brought up good memories from tens of years ago. Music can undoubtedly heal wounds.

There has been an increase of deaths in Alameda County due to opioids. For reducing these numbers, music therapy is a viable solution for those looking to recover from opioid addiction.

Organizations, such as Bay Area Music Therapy and The Music Therapy Center of California, work with individuals of all ages to address their various mental health needs. They can accommodate a wide range of people to fit their needs. Both of the organizations can help support individuals struggling with substance abuse disorder.

Music therapy incorporates different aspects of music to help patients experience their emotions in a healthy manner. Activities in sessions can include singing, interpreting lyrics, or playing instruments. However, participating in music therapy does not require any previous musical skill.

In utilizing these techniques for substance abuse, patients can find relief by alleviating their symptoms and helping them to process emotions.By exploring the different strategies in music therapy, victims of the opioid crisis can find relief in the restorative power of music.
