Downtown Danville construction

The Town of Danville issued a traffic advisory this week notifying residents that the traffic signals at Diablo Road and Hartz Avenue in both directions will be turned to flashing red lights daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting Monday during construction in the area as part of the Downtown Master Plan Catalyst Project.

“The traffic pattern adjustment was scheduled to begin after local schools ended their year, to mitigate impacts,” town officials said in an announcement Wednesday.

Drivers are warned to proceed with caution in the area and to anticipate delays on Hartz Avenue, and asked to consider detouring via Railroad Avenue.

The traffic signals will be restored to normal between 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. nightly during the course of construction work, which is set to be completed by the end of the week.

SRVFPD scholarship program

The San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District announced the expansion of their Internal Recruitment Training program last week in partnership with the Contra Costa County Community College District.

The scholarship expansion is set to build upon the existing program, which has been in place since 2020, during which 12 paramedic school scholarships and three firefighter academy scholarships have been provided to the district’s aides and reserve firefighters. Five scholarship recipients so far have joined the district as full-time firefighter paramedics, with two joining as full-time single role paramedics and five others currently in school.

“The scholarship program expansion will now offer scholarships for positions including Public Safety Dispatcher and Community Risk Reduction Inspector and offer Paramedic school scholarships to external candidates through a partnership with the Contra Costa Community College Foundation,” SRVFPD officials said in a press release on May 30.

In addition to covering the cost of education, the program includes a conditional offer of full-time employment with SRVFPD for at least five years upon completion.

E-sports at SRVUSD

The San Ramon Valley Unified School District has announced a new e-sports club and gaming lab at California High School, with the goal of fostering teamwork, communication, sportsmanship and other skills in students through the use of technology.

The lab consists of six gaming stations offering a range of game genres and aimed at hosting both competitive and community-building events.

“A school team can use a mobile station housing five computers that can be put on stage in a theater and the game broadcast to the projector, or the team plays in a computer lab, and the game is broadcasted to the projector,” said club coordinator and economics teacher Stephen Farwell during a presentation on the program.

“Family and friends can purchase tickets and watch the games from the comfort of the theater, and players can be cheered on by their family and friends and enjoy the same recognition that other school athletes do. Non-player students can support the team and school through IT, broadcasting, graphic design, and more,” he added.

The program is being funded with a grant from the San Ramon Valley Education Foundation.

“The San Ramon Valley Education Foundation (SRVEF) Major Gifts and Endowment Fund has a rich history of supporting long-term and innovative programs,” SRVEF Board President Gary Alpert said in an announcement from the district on May 31. “E-Sports is a program that brings a school community together in a positive and creative manner. We are pleased to provide the necessary funding to bring this exciting program to San Ramon Valley Unified School District.”
