Bin inspections

The Town of Danville issued an alert to residents this week about upcoming “lid flips” set to be conducted by RecycleSmart as a “visual inspection process to ensure proper waste sorting.”

“During the inspections, RecycleSmart teams will visually inspect carts for the correct separation of organics, recyclables, and landfill materials,” town officials said in an announcement Wednesday. “Organics, such as food scraps, yard trimmings, and uncoated food-soiled paper, should be separated from landfill waste to reduce environmental impact. Organics currently make up over half of the material sent to landfills and are a significant contributor to climate change.”

No fines will be issued during the inspections, with residents instead receiving a “cart tag” with details about what was improperly sorted and tips for proper sorting. However, local waste hauler Republic Services can elect not to serve bins that are deemed contaminated. Should that happen, residents are asked to contact them at 925-685-4711.

More information on the bin inspections is available at recyclemsart.org
