Lunar New Year celebration
Although the Lunar New Year officially kicked off on Jan. 29 – and was marked last weekend with an event at City Center – there is still a local opportunity to celebrate the occasion at the San Ramon Valley Unified School District’s annual festivities at Quail Run Elementary School.
“The celebration promises to be so much fun and offer something for everyone,” Quail Run Principal Bassant Abdelrahman said in an announcement from the district on Jan. 30. “It’s a unique opportunity to bring our community together to experience the beauty and richness of a cherished tradition.”
Now in its 14th year, the annual event is organized collaboratively by the school’s staff, high school volunteers, parents and caregivers, and students in Quail Run’s Mandarin program.
“Quail Run’s annual Lunar New Year Celebration reflects the vibrant diversity of our community,” said SRVUSD Superintendent CJ Cammack. “Events like this provide a meaningful way for our students, families and community members to come together as we celebrate cultural traditions that connect us to one another.”
The event is set for 5 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 8) at 4000 Goldenbay Ave. in San Ramon.
SRV response to LA fires
The recent catastrophic wildfires in Southern California have been on the minds of Californians from miles away, including in the San Ramon Valley, where Danville Mayor Renee Morgan and local homebuilders Trumark Homes responded in recent weeks.
In her latest episode of Town Talks with the mayor on Jan. 31 – which Morgan created during her previous term as mayor in 2021 – she debuted a new format for the monthly series, now in the form of short pre-recorded videos rather than live streamed discussions, and reflected on the LA fires and wildfire preparedness locally.

Meanwhile, the fires were also top of mind for San Ramon-based Trumark Homes, who announced Monday a $100,000 donation to the cancer research center City of Hope’s wildfire relief funds.
“City of Hope has long been a beacon of compassion and resilience, making a meaningful impact on countless lives through their cutting-edge cancer research and treatments,” said Gregg Nelson, co-founder and Co-Chief Executive Officer of Trumark Companies. “By partnering with them, we can ensure our contribution directly assists those who need it most during this recovery process.”
Recreation Expo
The Town of Danville is hosting its annual Recreation Expo and Open House this weekend aimed at showcasing classes, summer camps, and other activities scheduled for the spring and summer months.
“Activities at the event include kicking a field goal at the Danville Community Center, creating sports bloopers at the Village Theatre, and a football hula hoop challenge at the Danville Senior Center,” event organizers wrote in an announcement from the town Wednesday. “Guests can also complete a scavenger hunt hosted by the Town’s mascot, Auggie the Acorn, for a chance to win priority registration and other prizes.”
Now in its 15th year, the free, family-friendly event is set to span across the town’s facilities at the Village Theatre at 233 Front St., the Danville Community Center at 420 Front St., and the Danville Senior Center at 115 E. Prospect Ave. from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 8). More information is available here.
Behavioral Health Board seats
Contra Costa County is seeking residents to join its new Behavioral Health Advisory Board, with 15 seats currently up for grabs to qualified residents in the county over the age of 16 throughout the county’s five supervisorial districts.
The Board of Supervisors voted to establish the board on Dec. 17, 2024 ahead of new state legislation that went into effect Jan. 1 requiring counties to develop and implement behavioral health advisory bodies.
“This integrated advisory body includes designated members of the community prepared to address community mental health and substance use treatment services,” county officials wrote on their website.
