In celebration of its 100th anniversary, the Veterans Memorial Building of San Ramon Valley is set to host a family-friendly event this weekend commemorating the milestone.

Since 1925, the Veterans Memorial Building has provided an activity center for the local veteran community. The one-day event set for Sunday (March 30) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. aims to continue that tradition with a number of things planned including live music, swing dance performances and a scavenger hunt for kids, among other activities.

The UH-1 Huey Helicopter and a variety of vintage vehicles will be displayed outside the building (weather permitting) along with indoor displays depicting life in the 1920s. In the event of rain, most of the activities will be moved indoors at the Senior Center and Veterans Memorial Building, according to event organizers.

The Veteran Service Organizations planning the event will also have 100th Anniversary Commemorative coins available as a fundraiser for the building.

The classic building has played host to thousands of veteran activities over the years as well as community events, attracting valley residents to downtown Danville for senior programs, parties, banquets, weddings, voting, library use and many other occasions.

In 2012 — after more than 80 years of special events — the Town of Danville and members of the community came together to support and celebrate the renovation and expansion of the Veterans Memorial Building at its current location, adjacent to the Danville Senior Center.

Sunday’s event is free, and free parking is available on surrounding public streets and in all downtown municipal parking lots. To accommodate the large outdoor displays and pedestrians, East Prospect Avenue between Front Street and Hartz Avenue will be closed.

The Veterans Memorial Building is located at 400 Hartz Ave. In Danville. For more event information, visit vmbsrv.org.
