San Ramon Library open Mondays
The San Ramon Library is set to be open on Mondays once again starting March 31, months after hours were first cut as part of $8.6 million in budget cuts across all of the city’s departments.
The City Council voted in February to restore the 10 hours that had previously been slashed at the library from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. following the passage of Measure N in November, the 1% sales tax measure that is set to go into effect in April.
“With the passage of Measure N (a 1% local sales tax measure) in November 2024, additional revenue will offset the expenses associated with restoring library operating hours,” city officials said in an announcement Thursday.
Street Smarts contest winners
The winners of this year’s Street Smarts video contest were announced and recognized at an awards ceremony earlier in the month that drew approximately 165 attendees.
The annual contest, now in its 20th year, aims to showcase the video production talents of local students for the sake of increasing awareness over street safety. With the theme “Safety First!” this year’s contest garnered 35 total submissions from 85 students.
First place prizes for both middle and high school students consisted of $300 Amazon gift cards, with second place winners earning a $200 Amazon gift card and third place winners earning a $100 Amazon gift card.
A list of the winning teams and their first names is available here.
Dungeons and Dragons improv
Berkeley-based improv group Synergy Theater is gearing up for their run of “Dungeons and Dragons: A Spontaneous Quest” in Walnut Creek during the first two weeks of April.
“It’s completely improvised and inspired by the famous fantasy-adventure role playing game,” Artistic Director Ken Adams said in a press release March 20. “So, there’s a band of heroes that are off to save the world but, all throughout the show, their successes and failures are determined by audience members rolling the dice to determine their fate.”
While the classic role-playing game is the center of the upcoming production, Adams noted that the goal is to provide entertainment for all, regardless of their experience or knowledge of Dungeons and Dragons.
“It doesn’t matter if you know the role-playing game,” Adams explains. “You don’t have to know anything about the game to enjoy the show. The show is for everyone, D&D fans, fantasy-adventure fans, improv fans, theater fans, anyone looking for a fun, funny, exciting night of theater.”
The show is set to run Thursdays through Sundays from April 3 to April 13, with showtimes at 8:15 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and at 3:15 p.m. Sundays at the Lesher Center for the Performing Arts at 1601 Civic Dr. in Walnut Creek. Tickets and more information are available at lesherartscenter.org.
Trails challenge kick-off
The San Ramon Trails Challenge is set to return this year starting with a kick-off event Tuesday (April 1) at Sports Basement at 1041 Market Place at 6 p.m.
The self-guided challenge seeks to encourage residents to make use of the city’s miles of walking trails between April and September at their own pace and in line with their own goals.
“Whether you’re hiking solo, with your dog, family, friends, or co-workers, the Trails Challenge is free to join and accessible for all fitness levels,” organizers said on the city’s website. More information and registration is available at SanRamon.ca.gov/Trails.
